Travel editor Craig Lancto is a veteran
educator and journalist, with a total of more than twenty-five years as a college and secondary school teacher (English, journalism,
and drama) and more than 1,200 published articles, features, and columns. He has hosted weekly radio and cable television
programs about education, and spoken about education and newspaper education at dozens of conferences and teacher training
programs.
For nearly fifteen years, he wrote a weekly opinion
column featured on the Opinion page of the Virginia Journals. More recently, he wrote and edited Class Act, the Newspaper
in Education feature pages at The Washington Times, and served as the education
editor of The World & I magazine, to which he regularly contributed travel
and culture articles in addition to those related to education.
Since 1999, Lancto has served on the Newspaper in
Education Committee for the Virginia Press Association, serving as chairman from 2002 through 2004. He has presented at dozens
of colleges and school divisions, and conferences including those sponsored by The Newspaper Association of America, The Virginia
Association of Teachers of English, The Virginia State Reading Association, and The Virginia Association for the Social Studies.
At The Washington
Times, he led teacher education workshops in newspaper literacy and newspaper education for teachers from Maryland, Virginia,
and The District of Columbia. His guides for using the newspaper to teach reading, media literacy, character education, preparing
for the transition from school to work, character education, social studies, civics, and government are used by newspapers
across the United States.
Lancto's work has been published in a range of publications,
including The Washington Post, The Fredericksburg
Freelance-Star, The Arlington Catholic Herald, The Alexandria Gazette and Port Packet, The Title I Monitor, and magazines of the National School Board Association, The U.S. Telecommunications Association,
the Virginia Association of Teachers of English, The Newspaper Association of America, and scores of newspaper Web sites including
Travellady.com.
While continuing to write a wide variety of material,
Lancto focuses on two of his passions: education and travel. He also publishes the Sun Newspapers of Alexandria.
Sought after as a public speaker on newspaper and educational issues, Lancto
is currently working on writing serial stories, educational tabloids on subjects from dinosaurs to volunteerism and celebrations
and traditions in North America and Europe, and a book about how newspapers
are produced, from idea to distribution.
